artistS of the month: Richard Denzer and Susan Pratt-Sheridan

Custom painting, Richard Denzer
Boston Common, Susan Pratt-Sheridan

Richard Denzer was introduced to the techniques of watercolor painting more than 30 years ago, inspired by a high school art teacher who excelled in the medium. Yet it wasn't until the early 1990s that he started painting seriously again, and concentrated on the craft. Prompted by the beautiful historic buildings of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, Richard began painting architectural renderings of attractive antique homes that caught his artistic eye. He soon established a part-time business in 1993 executing commissioned "House Portraits," an effort that continues today, working with local homeowners and realtors. An artist member of the Rhode Island Watercolor Society, he has exhibited paintings at the Society's Slater Park gallery, and has been included in three Juried Shows at The Zullo Gallery in Medfield, MA. Over the years, his work has also been shown in the Norfolk, Natick and Wrentham, MA Public Libraries. While much of his work is commissioned, Richard loves painting subjects of his own choosing, and looks forward to concentrating more and more on what attracts his visual interest - a rusty antique automobile, a dilapidated barn in an overgrown field, an old abandoned home with weathered clapboards and peeling paint. There is poetry in the details - and a great challenge in creating the painted illusion of light and texture.

In Susan Pratt-Sheridan's own words:

"In my work I try to capture a moment in time, an impression, a mood, a certain light.  I work in many media including watercolor, oil, charcoal, pastels, and graphite.   I am inspired by nature and its many changing moods and find uncommon beauty in everyday scenes.

My paintings frequently depict the beautiful and ever changing New England landscape.  However, I always travel with my paints and sketchbook in hand.  Monhegan Island, Maine and Tuscany, Italy have provided inspiration for many of my recent paintings.

I work in a very free and expressive style, using the power of color and strong design elements to communicate my experience with the subject to the viewer.  I am filled with a sense of awe at the beauty in the world and gratitude for the gift of expression."

The exhibits are open to the public.
