Books

Recent developments in technology have impacted virtually every industry in the world. There is no doubt that we are witnessing changes in the publishing industry as well.  Endless predictions circulate from publishers, libraries and the general public regarding the future of books.

The Dover Town Library staff believes books are an important part of our community, library and families. Ernest Hemingway said, “There is no friend as loyal as a book.” At the Dover Town Library we strive to build a quality collection of books, magazines and multimedia titles that will educate, inform and entertain our community. The staff is happy to help you place a hold, locate a book or make a recommendation.

While the library purchases a variety of materials, if you don’t find it on our shelves, we are one of 43-members in the Minuteman Consortium which includes many academic libraries. Minuteman membership provides access to a wealth of materials, and all requests and recommendations are given serious consideration for inclusion to our permanent collection. Our ‘Speed Reads’ also eliminate waiting for the most sought-after titles.

Reader’s advisory is one of the many traditional services we provide. We love to talk about books or help you pick out one that you’ll love. Browse our staff picks when in the library or on our webpage under “Hot Picks”.  Ask a librarian how you can join in the online conversation to share your favorite titles with friends and neighbors, or attend one of our Book Clubs at the library and share in stimulating discussions while meeting new friends.

Although, we welcome and embrace new technology, we seek to integrate technology into our permanent and traditional collections, programs and services.  The Dover Town Library is committed to literacy and life-long learning. You may borrow a Kindle or a Nook that are pre-loaded with hundreds of books from which you may choose. Overdrive is available for you to download your reading selections to your own device. Many of our books have QR code labels that link to “Read-Alikes”. Scan the code and you have access to recommendations that will link you to more great titles to explore. Ask a librarian for more information about the many services available.

The staff at the Dover Town Library is committed to providing you with free, open access to the world’s knowledge, information and culture. Please stop in or call for assistance any time.
